Flora - Changes in Vegetation
Since the embankment was breached in November 2021, the vegetation changes at the site have been dramatic.
A new eco-system of salt tolerant plants more able to cope with the twice daily incursion of brackish tidal water is now developing, including common reed and soft rush
Local botanist Peter Nicholson conducted a detailed baseline survey in the summer of 2023.
Management of the site does not generally allow for the introduction of species with one exception.
A plant called Triangular Club Rush (image left) is found exclusively in the river estuary just outside of the wetlands, making it very vulnerable to loss or damage.
Agreement was given to plant propagated shoots of the Club Rush within the wetlands area in the hope that it will expand naturally, and create a more secure colony of the plant.
The management team is also aware that any occurrence of invasive species such as Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed must be removed.
