Designated wildlife sites
The National Landscape contains both statutory (legally protected) and non-statutory designated high-value ecological sites for both habitats and species.
These sites often contain the best examples of priority habitats.
Combined, they make up a network that when managed well makes a significant contribution to nature recovery across the landscape.

Sites of Special Scientific Interest
The National Landscapes four ecological Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI’s) are our finest sites for wildlife and natural features, supporting rare and endangered species and important semi-natural and priority habitat.
Nationally, SSSI’s are seen to be representative of UK wildlife as a whole.

County Wildlife Sites
County Wildlife Sites (CWS) are areas of land recognised for their high wildlife value at a county level.
The Tamar Valley National Landscapes 33 CWS, totalling approximately 1,353ha, are important for conserving local biodiversity and include diverse habitats like ancient deciduous woodlands, species-rich grasslands, heathland, orchards, hedgerows, wetlands and ponds.
