American Skunk-cabbage
Originating from North America, American skunk-cabbage is present in the Tamar catchment, but the population is still establishing.
It needs a wet site and in the Tamar Valley we are finding it in wetland river habitat. Able to form dense stands, if left unchecked it may negatively impact on some native plants, out competing them by shadowing.
With support through the Farming in Protected Landscapes programme, in 2024 we initiated the survey and control of American skunk-cabbage in the Giant hogweed project area.
