Boosting Connections with Nature at the Tamar Valley Centre
Spring will be buzzing with even more colour around the Tamar Valley Centre this year…
Spring will be buzzing with even more colour around the Tamar Valley Centre this year thanks to a £6,000 Farming in Protected Landscapes project between Tamar Valley National Landscape, Cornwall Council and local CIC Pollenize who have planted out areas with a wild seed mix to attract bees, butterflies and other wildlife.
The pilot project to explore how communities could use their community space to help nature thrive will include six Bioblitz events held at the Tamar Valley Centre. In these, Pollenize will introduce the iNaturalist app which allows everyone to become a citizen scientist by recording what they see.
Project lead, Business Development Officer for Tamar Valley National Landscape, Steven Draper, says: ‘This project helps our bees and insects and also helps connect more people with nature, which is proven to help with our own wellbeing. Meadowland creation can really help with climate adaption, too. It helps to reduce compaction in the soil meaning it can soak up more water during heavy rain and the emerging science is pointing to a carbon absorption of 300g per year per square metre. This might not sound a lot, but Tamar Valley National Landscape’s Nature Recovery Strategy has identified that there’s a huge number of community spaces and gardens that could play an important part for Nature and wellbeing. This project will provide us and communities with the learnings required to develop and deliver more effective projects in the future.’
Farming in Protected Landscapes grants empower farmers and landowners to improve their land for Nature, climate, place or people and further opportunities are available in 2024 by contacting Farming in Protected Landscapes officer Becky Butland.
Come and join us at one of our BioBlitz events – 6 June, 4 July, 1 August, 5 September and 3 October. Check our social media channels nearer the time for further details and how to book @tamarvalleynl.
